If you love the CJ sound you will NOT be happy with something else.
You have three choices.
1- Upgrade$$$$ to a higher ended CJ with remote. BTW their remote units are amazing. Basically a Placette audio control system AND preamp in one.
2- Buy a Placette volume controller. These units will NOT interfere or degrade the sound quality.

3- This is what I did - DIY your own volume control between source and preamp. I ordered a Gold Point 25k attenuator and Bent Audio IR motor controller. Used a Radioshack plastic box, soldered two RCA cables DIRECTLY to the volume pot, $5 wall adaptor and bingo - remote control!!!! I've A/Bed it dozens of times and it also does not interfere or degrade sound. total cost about $325.

That is pretty much my sentiment. They have a specific signature, at least the one's I'm familiar with. I myself would put the dough into another/better CJ that HAS a remote.
You're talking about "a lotta dough".
I did have that option about a year ago. But economic sensibility regained control of my audio fever.
My DIY control does fill that need for a remote. But wow, those remote preamps just look wonderful.
I have a vintage CJ PV9a that has been extensively upgraded, no remote but a really great phono stage. I just love this thing and I have had a few preamps over the years. The upgrades brought this unit into the 21st century. I don't mind getting up to adjust the volume on occasion, no big deal. I've never owned a preamp with a remote. No sense in spoiling myself now and besides I look at it much the same way I do with listening to vinyl, keeps it from being a totally passive hobby.
