I live about 1 mile from Bob and have used them and highly recommended them to others, including a very happy wood1.
They brought my Counterpoint NPS-400 back to life for a very reasonable cost.
I know they are very busy but once you talk, they give you time and explanations.
is using V-Cap film capacitors for the power supply of a tube preamp. That's not exactly a new concept, but let's explore what that would require.
My Audio Research SP20 preamp uses a pair of 470uF / 450V caps in the main supply. Looking at Chris VH's website, the largest I find is a 47uF / 250V model. That would require twenty of these $200 caps. But wait, the SP20's rail voltage is 285V so you would need a series configuration to handle that which provides only a fourth of the value. So now we need eighty of them for a cool $16k plus a HUGE box to put them in along with suitable umbilicals.
I'm thinking I would just trade up to a REF6 and REF2 phono. :)
Whatever it is they do, it works and sounds great. They have 2 very nice Pre Amps with their tweaks built in from the start.
Not using $16k worth of caps in the power supply. :)
I've used RHB's services for at least a decade and have done at least 10 different mods and repairs in that time. Bob and Gary do great work and are really terrific people. My highest recommendation!
How are they on communication ?
I emailed them last week and haven't gotten a reply yet.
Call them. You'll talk with Andy.
The biggest downside with mods is that all the good people that do them are busy. There aren't that many good ones. These guys have been at it a long time. Good luck.
I have a Juicy Music Peach 2 that Bob just repaired, awesome
experience!!! Bob and his son Gary are both down to earth and
very personable. The Peach sounds great, their charges were
extremely reasonable and not a mark on it after pulling the
faceplate off and the main board out. I would give them my highest
recommendation. Great communication, options offered and stellar
service.
As an aside, when I dropped the Peach off I got to hear his
Rhumba 1.2 which is his Backert Labs base preamp. I have made
arraignments with Bob to demo this in my system against the JMA
Peach 2, which I never thought I would consider moving on from,
but his Rhumba 1.2 to my ears seems special.
there is no free lunch.
