In Reply to: RE: Do you think it is worth the cost to have an Audio Research VS-55 retubed and repaired at the factory? posted by Julien43 on April 17, 2017 at 14:54:32
I have a VS-55 that I highly prize. In the past I've also had a tube go and take out one of the resisters. If you can find a reliable, knowledgeable audio repair shop near where you're located you could save a bundle on shipping costs. You might also consider switching to KT-120's if you're replacing tubes. I did and I prefer them to the 6550's.
Follow Ups:
Can that amp take KT-88s. Because the Gold Lion KT88s are wonderful sounding and tough.
I just switched the Shuggies out of my Carver's for Gold Lions and what a improvement right out of the box!
They even make excellent smaller tubes. I've been using their 6922, B759, aka the 12ax7 and GZ34. Excellent sound and quality built
Definate increase in bass response/tightness with my Legacy Focus SE's.
Voicing with my Carvers via Telefunken 12AX7 Smoothies.
Try the GL B759s. They are just as good as my RCA long black plates.
