Hoping to do better than home theatre receiver or Dyna PAS-3. Looking for moderately priced (?used) preamp to drive L, R and center channels - long story. Speakers efficient, probably will go with tube amps.

Just add a Trinaural Processor to a decent stereo preamp.
Spread Spectrum Technologies provides some compelling information for adding a center channel. As a multi-channel listener I do believe what they have written. But their words could be embellishment to promote the Trinaural Processor. Can you direct me to some scientific support for their ad? I am most interested in their statement: ***there is an “Achilles Heel” within the stereo composite signal itself. This is the cross-coupled error signal.***

I have issues with that statement as well. It seems strange that I've never heard of it before, and there is no explanation regarding what it is or how it is corrected. Perhaps the box creates this mystical error signal.
I continue to read, keeping an open mind.

Will you be attending the California Audio Show over the weekend? I'm headed out now

I'm on the east coast and... no, I'm not planning to attend.

I cannot give you any references but you can experience this by test. Start with a mono recording and play it, first, over one (center) speaker and, then, over the stereo pair. Both will localize in the center but the tonal "body" will be different. Since all the signals are the same, the difference is an error introduced by splitting it electronically and recombining it acoustically.

I suppose it's nit-picking but I wouldn't call that an error so much as an artifact.
Thanks to your pinnae, well actually your HRTF in general, your clever brain can usually tell where sound is coming from and since identical signals launched at two points in space is completely unnatural it doesn't seem likely that you'd miss it...

Well, I am a believer that three channels is audibly superior to two. I have experienced it. I was just looking for information with an independent source verification that I could then share with others, especially those with serious doubts. If I find some backup I will let you know.

You might try looking up the Blumlein and Klipsch papers relating to 3 channel stereo.
He would have invented this in the 50s (or earlier), along with a multi channel stereo receivers and a lot of other cool stuff that hasn't even been invented yet.
Along with that, he was a fabulous jazz musician before he invented multi-track recording and changed his style. Thankfully (but not for him), he returned to his old style due to his arthritis in his later years and I was fortunate enough to hear him play at the Iridium Club before he passed on.

I think you mean Les Paul. His wife's stage name was Mary Ford.
