I own Tannoy GRF Memory 15" speakers and I'm thinking about getting a McIntosh MA 6400 to drive them with but I'm wondering if it will be up to the job. The amp delivers 100 watt @ 4 Ohm, the speakers are 8 Ohm so delivery to the speakers will be roughly 70 watts, [Tannoy recommends 50-250 watt] I know I can always get a separate preamp to beef things up, but if I get the MA6400 that will be it for the time being, so it will have to suffice on its own. Your input is welcome!

What do you listen to, how big is the room, what are you using now and is it clipping?
I remeber the original GRF playing symphonic music very nicely in a large room being driven by 30 watt maranzt 8.
Consider tubes if you are not into hard rock.
I mostly listen to fusion, jazz, blues and reggae. The room is 9 meters long, the part of the room where the speakers are is about 4 meters wide, I now use a Harman Kardon PM 645 which performs quite nicely, no clipping. It'is only 40 watt @ 8 ohm but it has a feature called high instantaeneous current capability which enables it to deliver 35 ampere when needed.
The reason I'm looking into other amps is the eternal question how much better can it sound.
If you like the Mac sound, I would shoot for about 200 watts per channel. That said I own an old MC2505 which is rated at 50 wpc. I can tell you they sound like a lot more and probably measure more. You can get a refurbished MC2105 for less than $1,000 which put out at least 105 wpc. If you can't afford the 200 wpc amps. I would avoid class D amps, I just don't think they will synergize well. A Class A amp would be ideal but they are costly.
