Hi,
This is a duplicate post from General forum. Sorry for the inconvenience but I need some opinions fast.
I have an Adcom GFA6000 amp and matching pre-amp that I haven't used for a while. They were replaced by a Denon AVR-2805 receiver, so I could update the movie/Dolby modes and save some space.
I was told that the new receivers "sound just as good as separates". I thought this was wrong and it was. I have learned to live with the slightly degraded sound coming out of my B&W Matrix 805 speakers. I imagine you could learn to live with being waterboarded eventually also.
The receiver has crapped out and a buying opportunity has arisen.
Do I buy a USED Integra DHC 9.9 pre-amp ($625) to run with the GFA 6000 or do I buy a NEW Anthem MRX300 receiver ($900)? New pieces have a full 3 yr warranty, used comes with a 30 Day warranty. Either piece would be from a highly respected store.
Obviously the Anthem receiver takes less space and is simpler to install, costs $275 more and has a better warranty. I could sell the Adcom amp and probably cover most of the price difference.
Would the Adcom/Integra pair SOUND BETTER enough to be worth the extra wiring/space, shorter warranty, etc? I also keep $275 in my pocket.
Thanks in advance.
Joe

Arcam. Or maybe Marantz.
My five year old Arcam is on par with a lot of separates.
I read VERY good things about Marantz for SQ.
I'm leery of Anthem, I had a BAD experience with them and service. And isn't that the unit the makes you hook it up to your PC to adjust the room correction? If you don't have a laptop you're kinda screwed.

That's them and that's one of the reasons it works so well.
I would probably say keep the Adcom. I was browsing a few seconds for you, did you ever check out Emotiva?
They have a clearance on their older flagship processor for $499
you should check it out, it's called the UMC-1
I've read about many happy owners of Emotiva products. Especially those beginning the game. I would always do separate components.
I installed an Emotiva UMC-1 that replaced a venerable Lexicon DC-1. I run all my two channel signals through a Conrad Johnson 17LSII preamp. The Emotiva sounds terrific for movies, and I like the ergonomics very much. Not so hot for two channel, which sounds pretty harsh compared to the CJ, as you would expect I guess. Using the Emotiva internal dacs for two- channel music produces a hyper-detailed image that is very clear, but etched and rather sharp in the treble. I tried several different 2 channel digital input devices and lots of different cables and the Emotiva still sounds like a $500 unit to me for two channel. But for movies, it does everything very well indeed. The video processing is superb to my eyes, and the hi-def sound is startling. I wouldn't call it vastly better than the old Lexicon DC-1, even when comparing lo-def digital coax versus hi-def HDMI surround inputs. Again, more detailed, but less hi-fi, if that makes any sense. The Emotiva is a killer buy though, and my unit has had no bugs at all; zip, nada. It sounds better if I roll off the treble a bit, which you can do for all seven channels. A good option, if not a great one.
I saw the Emotiva banner for that and checked it out.
I've been "out of the game" for awhile now, never heard of Emotiva before. I'd be curious to hear from owners as I noticed the $499 clearance sales are Final, no returns allowed.
Would the Anthem allow you to use it as a preamp out for your main speakers so you can use the Adcom for front left/right?

THanks.
I assumed the Anthem had pre outs at $900.
I have an iPad, not a laptop.
So I can't use the ARC adjustment without a laptop or would an iPad work, through a camera connector kit? Seems to me that the people favor the Anthem in that price range do so beacause of the ARC.

This was in response to Enophile's immediately antecendent post, not yours.
