Hi,
I have a Rega RP1 turntable, Yaqin MS-12B phono preamp, and Yaqin MS-20L integrated amp. The preamp has a stud for a ground wire. The Rega has no ground wire. Whenever I turn off the record player, which I have to do to flip the records, I hear a loud pop sound unless I turn the volume down on the preamp first. I don't hear this noise when I turn the turntable on though. The guy who sold me the amp and preamp says this pop is because I don't have a ground wire hooked up to the ground "stud" on the preamp. He told me, "this preamp is designed for higher end turntables that have a seperate ground wire." So, I thought maybe I could add a ground wire to the turntable somehow. I asked the U.S. sales rep/distributor for Rega if this could be done and he said, "adding a ground lead to the arm will do nothing for the pop you get when you turn off the turntable. The arm is already grounded through the shield of the left channel." So, I don't know what to do. Are both of these guys right? Any thoughts on how to get rid of the pop? I just wonder, if a preamp is designed to be grounded through the ground stud, can it be properly grounded through the shield of the left channel?

There's no need to keep turning your turntable off. When I first bought my Rega table the dealer suggested to give the platter a bit of a shove as I turn on the power then leave the power on until I'm done using the table. If you take your finger tips and lift the LP off the platter it should be easy to turn over without any drag or other issues. If you haven't done it that way before it may take a couple times to get used to. As a side note I've used Creek and AcousTech phono stages and have never had a ground issue with my Rega.
Adding another ground to the Rega will probably result in no change or a ground loop. The Rega is grounded through the phono lead shield.
Not my favorite way to do it, but it works.
Most likely what is happening is the preamp or tonearm wiring is picking up an AC spike caused by the power switch on the turntable opening when you turn it off.
What may work is putting a surge suppressor capacitor across the switch contacts.
Thanks for the tip. When I hook this turntable up to my Marantz SS, I don't have the pop. Knowing this, do you still think it's the off switch on the turntable that's causing this?
possibly. It could be the preamp not the tonearm is picking up the noise. It could also be the preamp is grounded differently and the grounding of the tonearm is not adequate.
Rega tonearms rely on the input jacks of the preamp being grounded to earth (chassis) ground. In the Marantz it's likely the case. In the preamp it may not be. Signal ground and chassis ground may be separated to some degree.
