Good afternoon fellow inmates:
Can anyone reading this point me to, or provide me with, an introduction to the inner workings of a pre-amp and amp for the EE challenged?
The wikipedia entry for amplifiers is just out of my grasp as I do not have the background knowledge to understand the “language” thoroughly enough. I need something a second grader could understand (no, I don’t have kids. It’s for me). Kind of like “From RCA to 5-way: the Journey of a Signal”
Thanks a ton.

These links may(or may not)help a bit........

I'd be willing to take a stab at it. But first I'd like to know to what depth you're wanting to go. I know you say you want something a second grader could understand, but do you just want something like a simple block diagram or are you also interested in some basics as to how the active devices (i.e. transistors and tubes) work?

Thanks for the offer. I think it would be most helpful to have a basic route, mentioning what units (caps, resistors, etc.) the signal passes through. That would allow me to research and understand those units in context.
What caps, resistors, etc. really depends on the specific preamp under discussion. There is no general solution.

So where does one begin? Where did you begin?
I began by learning about electricity and electric circuits. In college, I learned to build electronic devices for my physics labs.
In parallel with that general education (part in school, part casual), I read the electronics magazines extensively. Unfortunately, the best and most relevant for a nuts-and-bolts education are gone. OTOH, I suspect there might be internet stand-ins but I do not know them. Perhaps someone else can suggest some for you.

Find a copy of Robert Harley's book.

Thank you for the recommendation. I might just check him out for other information, but if I am to believe any of the online opinions about Mr. Harley's books, his grasp of the technical aspects of this hobby is unreliable.
I gathered from your original post that you wanted a bit of spoon-feeding, so Harley's light-on-the-numbers approach might suit you. It is hard to find hard-nose information expressed with clarity for non-scientists and this might be a good start. From there, you can search out more.
Also, I wonder about those "online opinions;" I prefer to keep my own.
