I own a Sota Sapphire, (not Star version) and the single best thing I did was have the motor upgraded. I have heard that Sota is making a come back, but I dont know how to contact them. Originally the table came with DC synchronus motor and mine was upgraded to AC synchronus. It made a huge difference in sound quality, though I couldnt tell you any of the technical stuff as to why. I also couldnt tell you if hum is related, only that the upgrade will take the table to a new level. I have the same arm as you, with the Sumiko Talisman DTi cartridge which was a good cartridge in its day. When I have to upgrade I'll probably try the Grado Reference series first, maybe Benz-Micro as well. Good luck!
