Actually the Linn Basic and the RB250 are of the same basic

design. I have had numerous of both apart and the similarities are amazing. I think the Rega anti-skate mechanism is better.

A Linn dealer friend once sent me a boxfull of defective Basics. all had the same problem. The VTA clamping system (which the Rega does not have) is basically a setscrew jammed against the vertical post. In each case it had been screwed down so hard and so many times that the metal was distorted and depending on the exact position the arm was in put pressuse on one or both vertical shaft bearings. The housing wall seems to be thin and soft. Linn didn't want to know about it. Replacing the bearings fixed the problem until the next time.

I don't know if a RB300 "sounds' better than the Linn (I have never used a Linn arm) but I personally feel it is a better quality product. Considering the price point the Basic was sold at and the fact Linn bought it in from an outside manufacturer (like all their arms and cartridges) it is not a high value product.

But to change you will have to change the armboard.
