IIRC, (Based upon a mid 1990's HiFi World Article) Strathearn was a company funded by a uk govt grant to develop a TT. The motor they chose was designed for toys (where it worked silently) but when required to give higher torque for TT use it was noisy. The company sucked up alot of Govt funds and if the reviews at the time were anything to go by, funds weren't all that sucked.
They look great, are a decent piece of industrial design, but if you are looking for a DD to play vinyl, better off going for a Technics SL120 (1979 armless version of SL1200 just prior to the quartz lock versions) or if funds allow, an SL1200 or if funds are substantial an SP10.
