Great band, he's in good voice, a solid set of songs. Some are great, some are good, some not so, but then that's been the case with much of his output since the 80s. He's prolific, and like Prince, that means you get what you get - especially when it's two CDs/three LPs worth at once (with a promise of Vol 2.).
The poor reviews I've read focus mainly on the lyrics. Seems the reviewers don't agree with what he has to say in a small number of the songs, so the record has to be shite, despite great band, good voice, etc.
