I grew up in Tucson and I can't think of a band that was more universally liked than Lynyrd Skynyrd. Maybe the Eagles. This was the early 70s and honestly I don't recall anyone in any of groups I would hang with having a Beatles album (our older brothers & sisters did) - but nearly everyone had Eagles and Skynyrd LPs.

As far as the writers and critics they seemed to take somewhat a hit because they were compared to the Allman Brothers. I never thought that was a fair comparison but then again it didn't take me long not to pay much attention to critics. What was it they said, and I've heard many a book worm repeat - Lynyrd Skynyrd is a poor/uneducated mans Allman Brothers. Just another elitist COS.

You're right about Ronnie Van Zandt. After the accident the band could never be the same.
