stop me if you have heard this one before

I can't remember the storytellers name, but he was first trumpet in the tonight show band, the one led by doc Ican'tspellit, way back in the fifties/sixties

Anyway, he was saying that he, when he got off work at the studio, and Chet, used to cruse the little beach towns , back when most little California beach towns had a jazz club on the main drag down by the beach , sit in for a couple of tunes or so, and mainly try to pick up women, since they were both fairly big deals as players and more so in a little local jazz club..

I am beginning to think the tonight show player was Maynard Ferguson , but wouldn't bet on it. Anyway, the tonight show guy would always drive , since he had a steady gig , TV money and a car, while Chet, being an addict, was always broke, no money, no car.

In my beach area, the lighthouse cafe , as in "Howard Rumsey's world famous light house by the sea church of jazz" is holding on as a rock venue, but has jazz on Sunday , with some kind of brunch deal I have never been too, early Sunday brunch featuring bar food is not a concept I deal with often.

The place has created a lot of performance memories I am thankful for, and I am certain I am not alone. I have grabbed a small amount of live jazz recordings from that venue, whenever I see one, and

One standout of many memorable performances is of the 4th of july, they would skip the small main stage, and just cram a big band in against the back wall, seemingly taking up about a third of the room. Los angeles has a lot of professional players that love the opportunity to play big band charts. I would always stop by the opened dutch door to listen at pros cranking it up to run equal or better to the 4th of July beach insanity taking place outside, back in those days.
