so, we're in our friends 'home studio' [that is, his garage with 'egg carton' foam sound panels] and after I tune up, play the opening riff to 'Steppin Out' ... the other guys grab their guitars, or sit down behind keyboards and drum kit and start playing 'The Work Song'
*shrug* so I keep going and fake my way through it ... that's been how my jazz education progressed if progress there was ... next thing you know:
I hear Freddie Hubbard's 'First Light' and zero in on George Benson's playing ... hmm ... reminds me of ELP's 'Lucky Man' so I swap those chords in and 'circle strum' ... had First Light transposed in about 45 minutes
it wasn't completely right but when I trotted it out the next time I was in that garage everyone's eyes lit up and we all faked our way through it
so if I ever get an album off the ground it'll be 'Garage Jazz Muzak'
we'll do 'Rope Ladder To The Moon' and Another 'Nother Night In Tunisia
that oughta be a good start
regards,
