RE: ping xaudiomanx re MG 1 effective mass

I actually covered this in the other thread....

Since there is no pivot point laterally (the linear tracking arm moves in a straight line), the effective mass laterally IS the mass of the wand....which is 28g.

The effective mass is related to the mass of the cartridge (and the mass of the counterweight on the opposite side of the vertical pivot point) and the relative distances of each to the pivot for vertical movement. Hence, the gentleman has stated a range for the ratio by which the 28g is reduced based on the range of the cartridge mass for which the arm is designed. The set VTF will alter the counterweight position slightly so this needs to be factored in as well.

The ART9XA is a better match than the ART7 and original ART9 because of the lower compliance. However, an even lower compliance is preferable such as with the Ortofon MCs - any eccentricity in the disc and lathe rumble will potentially cause considerable lateral movement and degraded tracking ability with higher compliance cartridges particularly with 12" 45rpm discs.
