First time through, not super impressed. Certainly not on a level with "Amused to Death." Breaks no new ground - sounds like "The Finaler Cut Part II" - if anything, even more morose. Saying the melodies are elemental understates it - almost non-existent on many of the tracks - basic, not-very-memorable grooves with Waters ranting over them. His voice has deteriorated markedly. Lyrics are blunt and unartful; your tolerance will probably depend on whether you agree with him - he pretty much hits you over the head with his politics, with little attempt at poetic expression.Production is dark but clear, as would be expected. Usual studio frippery from his Floydian bag of tricks - sound effects
and snippets of voices moving in and out, acoustic guitars and vocals recorded up front, orchestral sweetening here and there, the occasional portentous piano chord with a long decay. Impeccably engineered. I'm listening to the cd - my local store had the disc for $11.99 and the lp for $38.99, and I wasn't about to spring for the difference without hearing the songs first. Won't be upgrading, though if it the music floats your boat, you'll probably find the differential worth it, judging from other recent Floyd-related releases and reissues.
