Use of any lubricant that is silicone based is a no-no

As it is almost impossible to be sure you've removed it, but almost any "volatile" lubricant should work. Once again, you still want to make sure there is no residue but at least you needn't worry about it migrating like silicone and screwing up electrical connections.

I would go with trusty, good ol' WD-40, applied with a cotton Q-tip or better, a toothpick. Spray some into a small dish or cup, NOT the headshell itself, and dip your "tool" into it, and apply to the "channel".

Perhaps clean it when freed with denatured alcohol. In fact, perhaps you might start with the alcohol and see if it is freed up with that. I do not recall there being any lubricant on a stock headshell, but the corrosion has left pits that will make it, even when freed, difficult to slide easily into place.

The top of the headshell (Thorens logo) is, I believe, a glued down thin plate of aluminum. I have a headshell that the former owner removed so he could use conventional screws and nuts to hold the cartridge. I suppose, if you don't have the plastic jig, that you'd have to remove that logo plate any way.

Remember, that plate represents a lot of weight that, removed, (I'd imagine) would change the mass at the end of the arm...better...worse?
