RE: Is the Alesis Masterlink still the gold standard for vinyl ripping ?

It really depends upon how you want to go about it, the easy fast way or the bit more laborious and technical way. The ML9600 is the easy fast way. I bought mine used 1-2 yrs. ago for the main reason of putting some LP's on CD for car listening. I ran with an all tube set up and a MM cartridge. I ran the signal from the preamp's rec. out to the ML9600. The MM (6.5 mV) gave enough gain to get good VU meter response. I switched to a MC (0.5 mV) and have had to run from the alt. amp output so I can adjust the gain.
There are +/- to using the ML9600. Stock up on some 30 or 40 MB HD's cause my HD croaked after 3 months. Also, I picked up some extra CD/R drives as well. The thing I dislike the most is that you need to be vigilant during recording so you can start new tracks on cue otherwise to go back and do it is time consuming. Some day I may opt to go the laptop route but this does a good job and the CD's sound pretty decent, ticks/pops and all. It takes a long time, 45 min. to burn a CD! Also, the CD drive is very noisy and has considerable vibration. I use it as a cd transport for my old DAC and it works ok but my old DAC (Arcam BB5)sounds better than the stock ML9600 CD playback.
