Many of us with CD/DVD players and rippers have placed our exclusive focus for P/R/T and musical tone improvement on CD treatments that decrease the vibration from the high-speed rotation units. As an example, I lathed the outer top edge of CDs with Systeme CD-Sound Improver and then used a Marigo Audio mat.
In advance of re-ripping 2,000 CDs, I just spent 200 hours testing alternative methods for improving sound quality and stumbled, by necessity, on an entirely unexpected breakthrough.
It seemed unfortunate when the damping of the aluminum/ plastic frame with rope caulk decreased the vibration and increased the rotational speed to such an extent that the ripper then rejected the brand new $195.00 Marigo Audio AIDA mat just after the 30MBG period ran out.
Left with degraded PRT/ musical tone, I tried rope caulk on the laser track but that led to lifeless music. So I substituted four Marigo Audio's 3mm Green Dots to the top of the laser-reader, two to the bottom, and four symmetrically placed for balance at the other end of the track. The welcome but entirely unexpected outcome has been an improvement in pace/rhythm/timing and musical tone at least twice as good as that produced by using the AIDA mat. Subtle reductions in micro-vibration at the laser-reader is evidently far more critical to sound quality than major macro-vibration reductions in the CD rotation unit.
The 3mm Green Dots don't show up on Marigo Audio's website but you can call Ron Hedrich (360) 835-9239 or email him if interested at
marigoaudio@frontier.com. A ~ $40 investment with a disproportionate bang for the audiophile buck if you are willing to open up your CD/DVD player.
And why not substitute brass for magnetic stainless screws while you have access? McMaster-Carr offers large inventory/ fast delivery if they are not locally available.
