The maple shelves of my component rack, finished with oil, after many years turned the color of a strained peas and carrots diaper. I disassembled and took them down to the bare wood.
Yesterday, I gave them 3 coats (yes, all in a single day) of General Finishes High Performance Satin Topcoat which my research showed would maintain their "whiteness" best. That is important because I've ditched the All-thread supports in favor of mortised Walnut legs and want the contrast.
It's obviously more 'plasticky' looking than either a BLO or Tung Oil based finish but quite acceptable.
The guys at Klingspor recommended wiping on rather than GF's own recommendation of a foam brush and rubbing between coats with a "grey" pad. The result is a wonderfully smooth and not too shiny finish.
