AER IPC Acoustic Energy AEQ-300 battery replacement guide diy

A fellow audiophile has expressed a desire for me to do a tutorial on replacing the batteries. A first I was going to send this information direct to him. Perhaps a search engine will pick up on this, and more people will benefit by posting here.

The replacement packs are an amazing $200 ea. (cough-cough) Special claims are made concerning the "workings" of said packs. (magic) AER makes another device called the "Acoustic EQ". It has been described as looking like an ironing board, with a similar size. What is unique about this product is that it is self powered. Yes, not a battery to be seen anywhere. So I ask myself, how can this $200 pack be so special, if the larger unit needs NO battery to function? There is one way to find out. Time to open this pack up, and peek inside

-------INSTRUCTIONS-------

1) Grind with a Dremel cut-off disk the plastic between the red arrows. The cut-off wheel should cut into the steel pin just a little, leaving a 45 degree angle on the end of said pin.

2) Cut into the plastic on both sides, AT THE SEAM, about 1/16 of an inch deep.

3) Use a wide flat blade screwdriver to twist the plastic apart, as shown. The cover you are prying off is heat welded where I have drawn the red line. It will come apart with a loud "cracking" sound.

4) Congrats! You are now inside. You will see two batteries wrapped in black plastic tape. Remove batteries, taking note of polarity! Remove the black tape and you will see a copper strip. Insert an Exacto blade under this strip, and work the blade back and forth. The copper strip is glued with a rubberish cement, and will peel right off with little effort. It will stick right back on your new AAA batteries without any new adhesive. The batteries used are your standard lithium 1.5v cells. (measure 1.74v new) AER has removed the original factory plastic covering, placed the copper strip against the cell, and covered with the black plastic tape. I reused this tape for my new batteries. What this copper strip does is a mystery to me. Perhaps it is the "PVA" that is mentioned.

5) Notice in the largest pic I have marked the correct battery polarity.

6) Two inch wide clear tape holds everything back together nicely.

7) Final note:

After a little practice, I was able to do three packs per hour.

With new batteries, I noticed the canisters to be a little more effective.

The voltage of my old packs were 2.65v
