Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: I gotta ask

Well, I admit it wasn't exactly my first choice. Years ago, it was going to be installed it into a combo, but that idea fell through, so I had an E120 hanging around.

Now, I use it as part of my repair bench for listening for sound faults, blips, bops, and dooply-dos. It's loaded into a small 1x12 cab, which I bought empty locally. The back panel of the cab had two jacks; I wired one jack to the 8ohm E120, and the other to an 8ohm 200W dummy load resistor.

It sounds excessive, but it's very useful. I deal with a lot of vintage 100W RMS heads, which notoriously blow right passed their rating. So, it's a lot of power handling in a very small package that I can tuck away very easily.

The main drawback is that the E120, when pushed, is freaking insane. My brother loaded a 4x12 with E120s... And WOW... Loudest damned thing I've ever heard. That was the day I understood the effects of a decibel sensitivity rating...

May your tubes be lively, warm, and long-lasting. Holy be thy heater.
