Military tubes had to be extra tough. We used tube-powered radar in our combat aircraft in the 1950's and 1960's until the aircraft industry went solid state. SS equipment was much lighter in weight, which on aircraft was extremely important. Don't know if the SS equipment was any more reliable than the tubed equipment, but the Soviets (think MiG's) relied on tubed aircraft radar at least through the end of the 1970's. They claimed that tubes were more reliable than transistors for their purposes.
Probably a good reason for the continued popularity of mil-spec tubes among certain audiophiles.
