Very close. I prefer the 3 a little more. I can't explain why other then to say it seems to do everything a little better then the 3a. Goes a little deeper, has a bit better mid. The 3 has a different crossover point then the 3a, and both were restored by different individuals. Perhaps it's that. I don't know. My 3a is early and has the same 12" cloth woofer that the 3 has.
Can't go wrong with either, IMO, assuming proper restoration and proper amplification. They are not the easiest speakers to drive.
