Your missing some bass unless

Hello Alley,

I would say that you are missing some bass because all channels contain some bass. However if you have a set your DVD player to output stereo only in the setup menu for each movie playing, I think all the bass in all the channels gets mixed down into the left and right channels.

The center channel is used to anchor the main dialog to the screen. If one is sitting less then 20 degrees off center, then one can do without a center channel. Greater than 20 degrees and the sound will originate to the closest speaker and away from the screen.

There is a myth generated by the 2 channel only crowd that speakers fall into two camps, HT or music. I want good speakers which means that they excel in both applications. A speaker that is only good for music is lacking good linearity and not very capable of following the dynamics of a soundtrack without a change in pitch. I also don't want a speaker that is made only for HT as their frequency response in the off axes isn't very good. The other quirk I find in the 2 channel crowd is that if you have an HT setup, then all speakers have to be lousy. Why? I disagree with that assertion as there a tons of great speakers out there in a big price range that excel in both applications.

Lastly, if your watching movies that are only dialogue, then one can be reasonably satisfied with 2 channels only. On the other hand, if the movies one is watching is building a sound field that encompasses the listener, then one needs surrounds to get the full affect. Two channel is only capable of projecting the sound field 180 in front of the listener. The surrounds are needed to get the 180 degrees behind the listener. Its physics.
