When audiophiles email me about music, enthusiasm is highest for dance music and thrash metal. But it's one thing to be into thrash now, versus its late-80s/early-90s heyday. And so, audiophiles keep asking me for stories, details, and experiences. They love the subtle little angles, such as not being old enough to use the drink coupons on alcohol. They want to know what it was like for a straight-A girl to go, and then get grounded. They want to know which early material the bands played then, that they don't play now. And then they want you to tie it all back, and see how well or poorly the audio product connects with the music.

See, at that June 1988 concert at The Stone, Testament were still kind of local and "underground."

A year-and-a-half later, I went with my then-girlfriend KJ, to the 12/17/89 Testament concert at The Warfield, which was larger than The Stone. If you asked her, KJ's honest response wold be that, in all of the concerts she'd been to, that Testament show had the greatest sense of awe and power. But by the end of 1989, Testament were internationally known.

Want to know something else? After the Testament concert (they did not perform instrumentals, such as "Confusion Fusion"), we rushed to my home, changed into formal wear, and had my dad drive us to KJ's high school Winterball. We caught the last 30-45 minutes. By then, the photographer had wrapped up, so we did not get to take photos. Nevertheless, after the awesome Testament concert, Winterball was anti-climactic.
