Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

thanks for the advice everybody RE: Behringrer crossover for subs - should I get it?

OK.
Most of you are saying to go ahead and run the mains full-range as I have been doing. And to use the Behringer just to low-pass the subs.

You are probably correct. That should result in the best and purist sound.
I am a little disappointed in that verdict, but there it is.

So now I plan to simply insert the the Behringer in place of the passive low-pass filter I'm using now. It is more versatile and will give me more control than I have now. I just wish the stereo x-over on it went down to 40 or 42Hz instead of just 44Hz, since that is working pretty good for me now. Although with its steeper slope I might still get less actual overlap with the mains. Of course, if I need to, I could always use the mono sub x-over with its lower frequencies.

Why do I insist on running dual (and hopefully stereo) subs if they are crossed over that low? Well, I have them positioned under the main bookshelf speakers such that the system acts like full-range 3-way speakers: point-source and all that, you know. I realize it's just academic, but it does look kinda cool. Besides, the amp is stereo so I might as well run stereo signal to it. Although right now I'm running a splitter on the mono sub signal to utilize both channels of the amp.

Oh, and the 30Hz hi-pass filter on the mains is there merely as an added protection for them, not for any cross-over or other sonic purpose. Gives me extra peace of mind when I'm playing Also Sprach Zarathustra, etc.
I have blown the woofers on both KEF and Energy bookshelf speakers in the past, so I'm a little paranoid about excessive lows going to them.

Thanks again for the good advice.

I will report back in a few weeks to say how it works out.
