Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

No brainer indeed!

I just listened to the PSB xb's at Crutchfield. Crutchfield has a screen with a bunch of speakers behind it that you can switch in and out but you can't take them out and move them around, so it's kind of a weird demo. In that setup it was a no-brainer, with the PSB's well below the level of resolution I recall from the Celestions. I also heard a Focal 705 - this one was out on the floor on stands -- and found it very unimpressive. The Focal 706 and PSB Imagine B were a bit better than the xb but still below the Celestion. I grew up with acoustic suspension bass and it is hard for me to get used to the bloat and rounding you get from mid-priced ported boxes. The B&W CM1 I heard at another store did sound very good, superior to the PSBs and Focals and maybe better than the Celestions, though the source material didn't have a lot of bass to test its ported woofer.

The only thing I heard a Crutchfield that I would take over an SL6 was a pair of Def Tech Towers that go for several thou, I was told. If you're reading this and you have several thou to spend I recommend listening to them, especially on rock. Maybe I'll listen to one of their cheaper models.

To be fair, Crutchfield is not a high end type of place and their demo might not have allowed the speakers to show what they could do under ideal conditions.
It's never too late to turn back the clock.
