Natalie & Nat King Cole, "Unforgettable"

In summer school 1991, my two classmates, Paola and Gio, were friends and roommates, who lived in one of those old apartment buildings near Honolulu's Pagoda Hotel. They were my study buddies, and the three of us worked on a group project.

From our downtown HPU class, we could take two bus lines. We could take one along King Street, and then walk south to their apartment. Or, we could take a bus to Ala Moana shopping center, and walk north to their apartment. When we did the latter, we could get lunch, and then go to the Tower Records, then located on Keeaumoku.

A controversial hit was the "Unforgettable" duet between Natalie Cole, and her late father, Nat King Cole. Here, Natalie sang along to a digital recording of her dad. Little did we know then, that this is how pop music would become, with all of the sampling and re-recording. 1991 was before the internet, so we don't really know just how upset "purist" audiophiles were, at "Unforgettable."

And of course, with the music, that could steer the conversation to me being an audiophile. The new July 1991 Stereophile had an ambitious group review of several speakers. The Epos ES11 scored well, and would seem to appeal to pop music fans like me and my friends.

I did not actually get to audition the Epos ES11, until the following summer. My girlfriend ACS and I went to Berkeley's dB Audio. Yes, we did have the Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole "Unforgettable" with us. And maybe that piqued the interest of a middle-aged couple. The husband seemed positively inclined towards the ES11. The wife was positively inclined towards the ES11's open-frame stand. She thought it'd make an awesome pedestal for her potted plant!

And no, we have not forgotten that Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" is now 30-years-old.
