David Foster & Olivia Newton-John, "The Best Of Me"

Maybe twice a year, audiophiles will reach out to me, and tell me how much they love the 1986 duet between David Foster and Olivia Newton-John, "The Best Of Me."

I already had it on cassette, but in the summer of 1986, my family went out for an early dinner at the Maliki Zippy's. Just as we got out of the car, a radio station played it. Walkman in tow, I stopped dead in my tracks. Because I wanted to listen to the rest of the song, I waved my family on, as I waited outside, to maximize reception. You just never forget moments like these, and their impacts last a lifetime.

The audiophiles complain that no one told them about this song, or that VH1, MTV, and radio stations never played it. The thing was, David Foster as a performer was known for the Instrumental, "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire." But he was better-known as a Producer, not performer. So those were the excuses, as to why "The Best Of Me" did not get much airplay.

Later in the 80s, my friends, then in high school, loved lite rock. "The Best Of Me" became one of our staples. If we played this via boombox while playing sports, even the opponents would set aside the trash talk, sit next to our girls, and let the music take over. And when my wife hears it now, she stops what she's doing, and gets into the music.
