I don't know when PJ Harvey's Dry hit the States, but we didn't latch on to it, until we returned to school for the Fall 1992 quarter. This was where we learned that a Sheela-Na-Gig was a Celtic statue/figurine of a grinning woman, spreading her oversized vulvae.
Dry was Stereophile's Recording of the Month for March 1993. Incidentally, that was the issue on sale, when the Stereophile Show took place in San Francisco.
I was not aware that demos were released on the original copies. So thank you for bringing those up!
