Steve Vai, "I Would Love To"

Not unexpectedly, the David Foster instrumental below has generated a swath of positive feedback. So now we return to power rock instrumentals. 30 years ago, guitarist Steve Vai was in Whitesnake. He took a little time off, to record a solo album, Passion And Warfare. Perhaps its most conventional, Joe Satriani-like song is "I Would Love To." The spoken part towards the end is indeed Whitesnake's David Coverdale.

1990 was before the internet. While in my dorm room, I saw the video for "I Would Love To." Yup, had to squint, in order to see on those small 13" TVs. Once I got the CD, I would indeed play this at audio stores. Most products fell on their face, but that's why this song was an acid test.

The fullest and cleanest sound can be found on the BSCD2, which came out five years ago. There are times when "I Would Love To" melts away the years, and my wife and I feel like we are in 1990 all over again. Then she looks up, and realizes that, back then, she wasn't old enough to vote yet! Still, my audiophile friends who are into this type of music have long used Steve Vai's "I Would Love To" as a staple.
