Anthrax, "In My World"

We've always missed the modular college Twin XL beds. You could stack two in a bunk configuration. But 30 years ago, my cousin Carla did not bunk hers with her roommate's. So if you had a single bed, note that some models allowed you to adjust the height of the plank. That is a two-person job, so I helped Carla raise her platform to the highest peg/rung/screw. Thus, she was able to stash her belongings under the propped-up bed.

Carla sat on the bed, and her shoulders drooped. She then discussed Anthrax's brand-new album, Persistence Of Time. She sighed about the United States' recession. She sighed about the west coast's drought. I added, "At least you're not n Santa Cruz; we haven't begun recovering from the [1989 Loma Prieta] quake."

"Look," Carla said, "I know these are bad times, but this [Anthrax's album] is depressing."

Indeed, with longer-running songs, depicting 1990's crumbling times, Persistence Of Time is a laborious listen. Carla and I agreed, though, that Anthrax presented thrash for the normal guy or gal. Of the "Big 4," Slayer represented hell; Megadeth added snarl to punk rock; and Metallica were the thinking man's (or woman's) thrash band.

Carla then went silent. She looked at her bed, and envisioned having sex there many times. Then she admitted that, without a boyfriend, "Realistically, it's only going to be two or three times a year -- if I'm lucky."

Because my girlfriend did not go to UC Santa Cruz with me [a repetitive theme throughout all four years], I also agreed with Carla that, while I hoped my girlfriend would visit me in Santa Cruz, realistically, I'd be lucky if that occurred more than once during the school year.

Carla then turned back to Anthrax. She liked the mid-tempo "In My World." It was slowed enough, that she could play or mime each note or riff. "In My World" is the kind of *safe* rock music audiophiles used to bring to stores.

I did know my wife, back in college in the early-90s. We bought a Twin XL loft bed for our kids, but they like it more for being a fort. Fine. So when my wife and I hear Anthrax's "In My World," we go up to the loft bed, and.........no, it's not like being teenagers again. But it does keep you from feeling old.
