OMD, "Secret"

Of course, memories of middle school, high school, and college are vivid. But elementary school? That's where it gets sketchy, which only reinforces the memories you do have.

In 1978/79, I was in 2nd grade. My parents would let me go outside to play in the apartment complex's common area, if certain neighborhood kids were out there. One was J.B., who was seven grades older. J.B. was a mix of black and white, friendly, mature, and at ease. He sort of looked after us little kids, and we looked up to him. That year, he was a freshman at Galileo, which was just blocks from Ghirardelli Square, Aquatic Park, and the iconic Tower Records on Columbus and Jones.

J.B. would bring out a few of his cassettes. I do not recall him ever saying, "You have to like this," or "You must hate this." He just smiled, let the song play in its entirety, and let us decide for ourselves. Subconsciously or not, I guess I always, as an audiophile, wanted to share J.B.'s "I'll let you decide" attitude.

Also, J.B. seemed to listen to his church. He would serenely smile, and say that, "If god were to appear, and ask me to go, of course, I'd have a hard time, letting go of this world. But that just means that I've had a good life. Yeah it would hurt to leave, but that would be more than offset, by attaining the kingdom of heaven."

J.B. not only let us know what Galileo was like, he always told us that, someday soon, we little kids would get there. And he consistently promised that we would do better than himself. And of course, we little kids were skeptical, and sported the "Nah" attitude. We could not see past the next day, let alone to high school.

Fast forward to late summer 1985. J.B. tipped us off about OMD's album, Crush. While "So In Love" was the hit at the time, "Secret" would go on to become one of our all-time favorites, especially as 1985 ended with lots and lots of rain, the last time the Bay Area would see that, until the 1992/93 season.

J.B. returned to Syracuse, where he and a bunch of others shared an off-campus home. He sent this photo, of what he and his roommate cobbled together. I thought it looked unstable, but J.B.said that (a) college could be a whole lot of fun, and (b) we'd get there soon enough.

I do not know if, upon graduating from Syracuse that year, J.B. ever returned to San Francisco. His family would move to Fremont, and I have no idea whatever became of them. No, I did not know my future wife in 1985. But like a lot of other people, audiophiles included, she loves OMD's "Secret."
