35 years ago, during my very first week of high school, I had to figure out the safest and fastest way to traverse San Francisco. Alas, it turned out that, of the myriad possibilities, they were all compromised. However, spending all that time walking, waiting, and riding MUNI Metro provided opportunities to listen to a Walkman, and later, Discman.
Perhaps it was KITS, which played former Go-Go, Jane Wiedlin's "Blue Kiss," as I was walking up Eucalyptus Street, to 19th Avenue. And lo and behold, when I got home, we'd see the music video, which merely had Wiedlin on the back of a truck. When I returned to school on a Monday, of course, a common subject was music. And when Wiedlin's "Blue Kiss" came up, one girl remarked, "She has a boy's haircut!"
We then, like audiophiles and their pissing contests, got into a debate about whether short hair on a girl was "pretty." Nevertheless, most of us liked Wiedlin's "Blue Kiss." When we have get-togethers and reunions, the smart DJ (yes, our graduating class did have a few, who became professional DJs) plays lesser-known, but much more enjoyable, material, such as Wiedlin's "Blue Kiss."
