Scorpions, "The Good Die Young"

10 years ago, I started working at Stanford University. The cross-Bay commute was long and hellish, but once you got to campus, it was a sort of Shangri-La. If you got there early, you could catch Condoleeza Rice jogging, or the van picking up teams to go to practices. During midday, you'd go to the post office, along with regular students. You'd do a double-take, and see George Shultz, alone, also in line. Even if students recognized him, no one interrupted, said hello, or asked to take a selfie.

Without traffic, such as on weekends, I could get to Stanford in 45 minutes. But during the work week commutes, I had to budget 1:30 to 1:45 each way. And when there was some event blocking evening traffic, you'd just stay on campus, eat at a dining hall, and wait for traffic to thin. If traffic were still bad, you could catch an early evening lecture or performance at Dinklespiel. You never knew if, for example, the Dalai Lama and his entourage would make a guest appearance. You'd turn your head, and see George Clooney -- accompanied only by a personal assistant.

But forget about celebrities. Even in summer, when campus was even quieter, some random passer-by would go up to you, and ask, "Excuse me, weren't you in my Poli Sci class?"

And you'd just laugh, "No, I only work here."

Maybe it was the evening President Obama's motorcade went through Palo Alto. But I stayed after work, and with the free time, researched music. I learned that the Scorpions had come out with a 2010 album, Sting In The Tail. Justifiably so, they said that they wanted to capture the vibe and spirit of their 1980s work, but with an updated sound. And one of the popular cuts was "The Good Die Young," done with former Nightwish lead singer, Tarja Turunen. She does a remarkable job, mimicking the sound of a keyboard.

So you'd be eating dinner in Wilbur, with its long tables. For a moment, surrounded by undergrads, you felt like you were 19 or 20 all over again, but with wisdom. After making small talk, what was a common-ground subject? Music. No, the students did not think negatively, for you knowing about an "old" band, like the Scorpions. In fact, some thought it was kind of cool, that a band their parents listened to, was, in some form, still around.
