Flotsam & Jetsam, "Childhood Hero"

An Inmate emailed, "Damn it Lummy, you and your beach scenes!"

Well, hey, if you live near the coast (above, Montara is south of Pacifica, and north of Half Moon Bay), might as well enjoy it. In 2005, Arizona's Flotsam & Jetsam came out with Dreams Of Death, songs literally about having death-related dreams. It starts to pick up about a third of the way in, with "Bleed." But "Childhood Hero" uses the formula of beautiful guitar intro, leading to distorted thrash. Alas, poor production mars yet another FAJ album.

One of my audiophile friends (dunno whom) borrowed Dreams Of Death, and I haven't seen my copy since the late 2000s. Anyway, my old friend Carmen (left) stayed at home in Daly City, while attending various JCs, including Skyline and College of San Mateo. During this time, we liked FAJ's 1992 album, Cuatro. In the late-90s, Carmen would transfer to and graduate from Arizona State University. Like me, Carmen has poor eyesight. So when going to the beaches, her greater fear was not of losing her bathing suit, but of losing her glasses or contacts. That was was especially acute, when she was the driver. Sigh, I believe she had an early-90s Geo Metro "3-door" hatchback. She thought that calling it "3-door" was dishonest, by calling the hatchback a door. But anyway, the Inmate at the top of the page loves giving me a bad time, for being nostalgic about late-80s and 1990s subcompact cars. Hey, for those of us in and just out of college, the "gutless piece of s---" subcompact, as he calls it, enabled us to get around.

The Inmate at the top wrote, "Damn it, a heavy metal-loving girl like [Carmen] is an audiophile's worst nightmare!"

Sigh, well, like the rest of our generation, Carmen is a middle-aged mom. Since our hair is completely white or gray, she decided to re-color her hair. She first dyed the whole thing gray. Then she had the top layers dyed what used to be her natural black.

Carmen loved that intro to FAJ's "Childhood Hero." She feels that most audiophiles aren't up to the challenge of the whole song. "Childhood Hero" is about shooting a demon coming for you in your sleep, only to realize that it wasn't a demon. Rather, it was just a father figure.
