John Fogerty, "Rock And Roll Girls"

Another audiophile was discussing a John Fogerty post below, and brought up that common topic of how radio stations only skim the surface, and do not play the artists' "secondary hits." And such is the case with John Fogerty's "Rock And Roll Girls," which gets snubbed in favor of "Centerfield."

My entry into high school wasn't at my hometown of San Francisco. Rather, it was, in mid-June 1985, summer school at Punahou in Honolulu. I took Oceanography, which I really should have done after taking biology and chemistry. As such, I was the only freshman in that class. And the only sophomores were from out of town, too. I had friends and relatives attend Punahou during the regular school year. While some did attend summer school, none was in my Oceanography class.

The requirement for Oceanography was the ability to swim. Yes!!! Finally something I could do! So on the first day of class, we went to the pool. While in the boys' locker room, we grooved to Fogerty's "Rock And Roll Girls," which isn't about fans. Rather, it's about the unspoken acknowledgment that music is life.

Anyway, I exit the locker room, and BANG! The girls were also outside of the adjacent locker room. And unlike the stick figures from my middle school, these girls were curvy and good-looking. F---! My confidence totally shot, I just wanted to retreat back into the boys' locker room.

As you tread water for a minute, you try to put Fogerty's "Rock And Roll Girls" out of your mind. Then the class dries off, piles into a couple of vans, and heads for Magic Island, for the swim test. You swim out to the wave break, and then backfloat back to shore.

Fogerty has said that "Rock And Roll Girls" is patterned off of the Rockin' Rebels' "Wild Weekend." Fantasy Records owned the copyright to Fogerty's Creedence Clearwater Revival catalog. When Fogerty was working on Centerfield, Fantasy sued, saying that Fogerty was plagiarizing himself. In court, Fogerty played "Rock And Roll Girls," and demonstrated how little changes here and there no longer made his new songs carbon copies of his older material. Fogerty eventually prevailed.
