Megadeth, "Symphony Of Destruction"

It's really wasn't until 1987, 30 years ago, when my schoolmates and I learned about, and got into, Megadeth. Being enlightened about thrash being the next evolution of punk rock gave us a leg up, in our music and writing classes. So here we are, 30 years later, still writing about this stuff.

The Fall 1990 quarter represented the height of thrash metal. Megadeth's Rust In Peace was a major component, spawning the blockbuster progressive metal hits, "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due," and "Hangar 18."

In 1991, Megadeth teamed up with Anthrax and Slayer, on the famous Clash Of The Titans tour (we still have a shirt, above). It was during this arena tour, when we long-time thrash fans began to bring our female friends. It was here, where they learned the differences between Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer. It was here, where they learned that, if you strip away the imagery, and get into the music, punk rock was the backbone, but upon that the arms, legs, and head consisted of blues, classical, and eastern influences.

Ah, summer of 1992. In my review of the XLO Reference Type 5 speaker cable, I've already written about Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction. Its "Symphony Of Destruction" was the one which made 4-5 of you gather in a circle, and sing, hum, air drum, and play along. Instead of us guys emulating the sniveling, whining, and snarling Dave Mustaine, we deferred to the girls. The girls' voices sounded better, and were an interesting listen. And besides, it was fun to hear the girls recite the lyrics:

Just like the Pied Piper
Led rats through the streets
We dance like marionettes
Swaying to the symphony
Of destruction

In the late-90s, "Symphony Of Destruction" would become available on karaoke. There, your same friends would pull out this "oldie," and have fun singing. And once again, your female freinds sounded best, and got the highest scores.

Just "Symphony Of Destruction's" edge-free production and mid-tempo pacing made it accessible to girls, they also made it easy for audiophiles to get into. So every time you go to an audio show, store, or gathering, "Symphony Of Destruction" is the safe, but fun and enjoyable, thrash demo.
