From Classic Rock to Progessive to hip hop to today's hot new tunes!

Indirectly

Growing up in San Francisco, I knew about the Bay Area's own Vicious Rumors, about whom I've written, in these very pages, several times. In 1985, VR had young guitarist Vinnie Moore.

In 1986, Moore went up to Cotati (which is on 101, between Petaluma and Santa Rosa), to record a solo album.

During the Fall 1986 semesters, my classmates bought Moore's Mind's Eye, whose neoclassical metal was, for the time, a new kind of sound. And who played keyboards on that album? Tony MacAlpine. Thus, we've known MacAlpine for over 30 years.

In 1987, MacAlpine went back to the Cotati, and recorded his own solo album, this time primarily as a guitarist (he also plays keyboards). This turned out to be the critically-acclaimed Maximum Security. Personally, I like Maximum Security, because it is more mature and easier to take, better than Moore's Mind's Eye. Moreover, for us audiophiles, the recording, at least on CD (back in high school, we originally bought the cassette), is very good. Audiophiles who like rock instrumentals must have this in their libraries.

But anyway, we heard about MacAlpine indirectly, via Moore's Mind's Eye. Check out "Hero Without Honor" below.
