Of course, Larry used to carry the Dead torch here and lots of us would happily chime in & sing along :). Somehow, without him, well ...- I still miss him.
I have this show in five different bootleg versions - the first two on cassette and the other three on CD. All sound reasonably good, a couple of them extremely good, but with a few sonic flaws. This official release sounds awesome! I had been concerned about how the tapes had been stored (as you may know, they were *not* in the Dead's possession until relatively recently). One of my boots was made from Betty's tape, long ago. I thought perhaps it might have an advantage. No. They've done an incredible job with this. The tapes must have been treated reasonably well through the years, and/or the efforts at sonic restoration have been wonderfully successful! This is just a joy to listen to, and it blows away all of my boots.
Best Dead show ever?? It's a silly question or claim. We all have our favorite band configurations and favorite tours. Spring of '77 *is* one of my favorite periods. I think it is arguably a great period, and 5/8/77 is a great show. I've introduced many people to the Dead using music of this period, as I think it is particularly accessible. But I don't see any good coming from debates about *the* best show. Better to simply ENJOY this great show - and look forward to more Betty Board releases to come :-)
