If you are serious about improving your system, consider purchasing what may be the best preamp in the world and sells for only $600.00 plus shipping. The March issue of the Audio Critic said the Morrison line stage preamp had the best measurements the reviewer had ever seen-even better than the Conrad Johnson 15K unit. I bought direct from the manufacturer and can tell you that it is nothing less than amazing. It is far superior than my previous preamp which cost almost 4X more. Incredible detail! It sounds like nothing at all-which is precisely how a reference preamp is supposed to sound. The improvement in my system has been enormous. If you believe that all amplifiers sound the same when operated within their limits, then the preamp becomes the critical piece of electronics. Unfortunately Morrison only sells direct, but here is his number-(416) 362-0523. Call him and he'll personally tell you all about the design.
