In late summer 1985, the rotoscoping video for A-ha's "Take On Me" revolutionized popular music. I vividly recall seeing it at the Shirokiya at Ala Moana Shopping Center. I had just finished my very first high school class, Oceanography at Punahou. But my cousins and everyone our age were trying to wrap our arms around the just-completed Robotech trilogy. On Oahu, we looked at/above the Ko'olau Mountains, and expected to see transformable fighter jets appear.
On the Big Island, Kilauea had been erupting for 2 years. Little did we know then, that it would continue to erupt, until 2018. Kona was known for its coffee beans, but those were used primarily as straight-up coffee. Musically, we may have heard about the so-called Compact Disc, but hadn't seen, let alone listened to, one. When A-ha's Hunting High And Low came out, we bought it on cassette, not LP.
In 1985, we only had Big Gulps. Today's #1 soft drink, boba, did not exist.
My future wife was not even 12 years-old, and had just begun menstruating.
37 years later, the trio of A-ha, despite going on farewell tours, decided to write new material. They just released a new song, "I'm In." They've sounded like this, since 1990. Their upcoming album is tentatively named True North, with a targeted Fall 2022 release date. Although it will be pressed on CD and LP, most people will buy the download(s).
We still do not have transformable vehicles. Kilauea has resumed erupting. Kona coffee is used in all sorts of drinks, foods, candies, and confections. My friends/former schoolmates are in perimenopause. But we are all glad that A-ha have maintained the same lineup, and are still going. Yeah, yeah, many audiophiles will say, "I'm in!"
