Well, supposedly she was/is struggling a whole life with depression related illness and being world wide famous once she made it a public affair. Not unlike all the rest of "stars" did and are still doing. Unfortunately she didn't age well.
If it comes to religion my take is that people have war and fighting in their genes. Take religion out and they will fight about something else and what stood as a religion driven conflict was often motivated by politics and economics. Its academic though because religion will never die since it is essential part of human experience for most of the population and for significant amount of "higher class people" too. You're making a mistake with equaling religion with church. Churches are institutions often driven by their own agendas. They are indispensable in their role but ultimately flawed like all human organizations are.
I hear you about the "happy countries" without red hat dimwits and religion. I don't buy all that happiness. To most in US it's the best country in the world. The belief based on pure conviction since "most" never set a foot in other country . A conviction enforced by the belief that EVERYBODY wants to come here. All the dimwits and a future red hat wearers are flocking from every shi...hole in the world. I bet there is a similar set of believes making the population to declare the happiness related to being a citizens of happy country
