Christina Aguilera, "Reflection (1998)"

Pittsburgh fans may want to divert their eyes for a moment.

In 1992/93, I was a senior at UC Santa Cruz. On 10/14/92, some of my coed neighbors were over at my apartment. We were watching Game 7 of the NLCS between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves. I was from San Francisco, so as a Giants fan, I did not want the Braves to win. My neighbors were Dodgers fans from SoCal so they were rooting against the Braves. Everything was okay until the bottom of the 9th, when Chico Lind's error opened the floodgates.

After that meltdown, Doug Drabek would sign with Houston, and Barry Bonds went to the Giants. I don't think the Pirates would have another winning season, for another 20 years.

On 5/14/93, a different set of coed neighbors was over. Though it wasn't on, we shockingly heard about the Pittsburgh Penguins (who were 2-time defending champs) losing Game 7 in overtime to the New York Islanders. We did not know then, that at Penguins home games, a little girl would occasionally sing the anthem.

Before "Genie In A Bottle" made her a generational and international star, that "little girl," who used to sing the anthem at Penguins games, Christina Aguilera, got her breakthrough, with "Reflection," which appeared on the 1998 Mulan soundtrack. As an audiophile, I hardly ever watch movies. But I actually saw Disney's animated Mulan with my then-girlfriend, KJ, at the Kabuki theater in San Francisco. Like most people, we liked Lea Salonga's version better. Nevertheless, "Reflection" was Aguilera's pop culture breakthrough.
