The two worst experiences I ever had at high end stores were (1) Lyric and (2) Pro Musica in Chicago, both back in the '70s.
At Lyric, after I had already purchased a Threshold preamp and a pair of Mission 770 speakers and was arranging with them to ship to my home in New Jersey, the salesman, who apparently was pissed because both items were closeouts (thus I guess, less commission) called me a cheapskate when I suggested-completely accurately-that the sales tax should be waived. He threatened to call off the sale, but when I said that was fine by me and started to leave, he changed his mind. What was truly ridiculous about this was that they were already charging an exorbitant shipping charge that I willingly agreed to.
At Pro Musica, one of the owners, Ken Christenson (who I think is still there), after I told him, at his request, what equipment I already had, said that only an idiot would buy that stuff. What was really great about his response was that one item, an Adcom 555 amp, which they actually sold, was singled out for special opprobrium!
