The border collie music critic

Our border collie Penny loved Mozart and the Beatles. She hated the Who. While I relaxed in my recliner she would sit at my feet and listen, but only if she approved of the music and sonic quality. If she disliked the music or if an LP was sonically too bright in the upper midrange and treble, Penny would leave the room, returning later when I changed the disc.

One time while listening to a live classical FM radio concert from NYC, a solo violinist hit an obviously bad note. Penny, apparently asleep, instantly picked up and tilted her head, then stared at the offending left-channel loudspeaker, clearly wondering what happened. From that day on, her nickname was "The Music Critic."

My lovable furry audiophile buddy died in 1984 at age 16. I think of her often when spinning discs in our music room.
