SVS SB-4000 subs (*ping - Abe Collins*)

The SB-4000s arrived yesterday afternoon (a FedEx Saturday delivery...who'da thunk it?). These things are almost 118 lbs each as shipped. Fifteen lbs of that weight is packing materials, so getting them unboxed and upstairs into the loft was quite an undertaking in and of itself. Each sub connects via bluetooth to their smartphone app, and once connected, volume, phase, and low-pass filter frequency can all be adjusted either by a slide or via arrows for fine adjustment. Filter slope is selectable -6,12,18,or 24 dB/octave. There is also a 3-band parametric EQ that I haven't experimented with as of yet. Said adjustments can be saved as multiple presets for each sub. I found this feature to be particularly useful, because my main complaint about subs in the past has been that the volume settings only seemed ideal for one volume level. The ability to adjust and save these settings so easily allows for convenient higher bass levels at lower volume, ala Fletcher Munson. Very nice, indeed.

The improvement to my setup was anything but subtle. All boominess is gone - bass is clean & tight to the lowest frequencies, and the ability to make those low frequencies heard at lower volume levels brings my enjoyment of my rig to a new level. Some of the perceived improvements seem illogical to me (such as improved high end), but you won't hear me complain about them. Make no mistake, though - these things are beasts. They're heavy as hell, and roughly 18" cubes without the grill.

I've never seen or heard the SB-3000, so I'm not able to make a direct comparison, but I'd suggest that anyone considering a pair of either of these subs go to the SVS website and look at the photos of both the SB-3000 driver and the driver for the SB-4000. The SB-4000 driver weighs over 50 lbs by itself, the driver for the SB-3000 about half of that even though the SB-4000 driver is only 1/2" larger in diameter. The amp for the SB-4000 is rated at 1,200 watts RMS, the amp for the SB-3000 at 800, and the cost if you buy a pair of either differs by "only" $900, i.e. $450 per sub. It's pretty easy to see where that money went when you look at the differences between them. Personally, I consider the difference in cost to be well worth the price of admission, so I don't regret this purchase in the least. I expect that these will serve me well until I'm no longer walking around on this rock. At least then someone else can move them next time, because I'm sure as hell not going to.
