it can all come down to money and timeline.
When higher accuracy with digital was put into practice and multitrack tape recording machines were no longer used, digital became the reference original. It was no longer necessary to strap 3 24 track analog machines together with time code to get 72 tracks (PF The Wall) and then mix them down to a 2 track master.
Digital masters on just about everything can sound wonderful all the way from 2 track 'live' recordings to over 100 track mixes.
Some of the digital or analogue demo's I've heard can be horrid without a good producer/engineer who has good ears and equipment. Sorta like a spray painted repro of Mona.
There are analogues that were 'painted' by true masters though and could never be redone any better.
